The story unfolds against the backdrop of a suburban area where a group of migrant workers struggles amidst the societal changes of the times.
Yuelan, abandoned by her husband, relies solely on herself and her son Xiaobao, facing the hardships of life. On her way home from a job interview, Yuelan encounters a bunch of rascals who sexually harass her. Luckily, she is rescued by the passing security captain Dawei.
Over time, Dawei succumbs to Yuelan’s allure, abandons his own wife and child, and assists Yuelan in raising her son Xiaobao. Yuelan, torn between stabilizing her relationship with Dawei, who has a family, and entertaining other suitors to repay her husband’s debts and support Xiaobao, hesitates to marry Dawei.
Xiaobao, a solitary kid, cared for by Dawei in his early years, develops a paternal dependence on Dawei as he grows up. Tempted by materialistic desires, he also harbors seeds of resentment. As Dawei gradually becomes aware of Yuelan’s hidden secrets, a storm is on the horizon.
